Falcons Playoff Scenarios

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo basketball teams are both heading into the final game of the season with Peach Belt Conference Tournament hopes on the line. The women’s basketball team has to win and get a little help from Georgia College in order to make it into the field of eight while the men are playing for seeding. The story below will explain the different playoff Scenarios as well as explain the tiebreakers that the Peach Belt Conference uses.

First, a quick review of the PBC tiebreaker: we look at head-to-head competition first, then division record if the teams split.  If the division record is the same, we then go to how they did against the #1-seeded team in their division.  If still tied, it’s on to #2 and all the way through the ranks.  Still tied?  Then it’s on to the #1 seed of the other division, then #2 and all the way through.  Still tied? Coin flip!

For the women, North Georgia has a one-game lead over the Falcons in league play.  For Montevallo to get into the tournament, they would have to beat Columbus State on Saturday and have North Georgia fall to Georgia College.  If that happens, Montevallo will get the No. 4 seed in the Western Division thanks to their better division record (the two teams split their regular-season games). If that happens the Falcons would travel to PBC Western Division No. 1 seed Clayton State University on Wednesday, March 2 at 6 p.m.

For the men, the west division has three teams trying to earn that coveted home game.  Clayton State, Georgia College and Montevallo all sit at 9-7 and no two play one another on Saturday.

UM holds the edge in the three-way tie due to the sweep of Georgia College. UM is 3-1 against Clayton and GCSU while Clayton is 2-2 and GCSU is 1-3. If GCSU loses and Montevallo and Clayton win the tie will be broken with divisional records. Montevallo has the edge here with a 5-4 mark in the division while Clayton State 3-6. Therefore, if Montevallo wins on Saturday they will automatically become the number two seed regardless of any other game. If that is the case the Falcons will host the number three seed on Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m.

Of course, if one team wins while the other two lose, they would earn that #2 seed. If two win and one loses, that losing team will be at #4 with the two teams that one going back to a tiebreaker beginning with head-to-head and working through the process.

Both programs will travel to Columbus State University this Saturday. The doubleheader begins with the women tipping off at 12:30 p.m. while the men take the court at 2:30 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on the internet and there will also be live stats.
