MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo hosted its first The Big Event on Saturday, March 26 to say thank you to the local community. Student-athletes from the University of Montevallo athletic department joined their classmates in the large community service project. The Big Event was founded at Texas A & M University in 1982 as a way to say thank you to the surrounding community. They envisioned a one day service event where students would thank the community that supports them by completing tasks at homes and businesses. The Big Event is now held each year at more than 70 universities across the country.
Members from the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball teams joined members of the Montevallo student body to do many local projects around the community.
The University of Montevallo Student Government Association with the help of the IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC Councils started this project in Montevallo this year. They hope that it will grow into an event that is anticipated by the local community and the University each year.
The SGA distributed job request forms throughout the Montevallo community allowing residents to sign up to have various jobs completed at their homes. These included cleaning, raking leaves, washing windows, painting, or anything else they needed help doing. Each organization was given jobs to complete.
Some examples of work done by the student-athletes are the volleyball team went to a local residents home and help clear brush from her front yard while the cross country teams went to the Wilton Town Hall and helped lay pavers as well as paint.
