CHARLES AVERHART
Men's Basketball
Averhart was one of Montevallo's first basketball stars. He led Montevallo to its only District 27 Championship in 1974-75. He averaged 15.5 points per game. Charles still holds the record for single field goal percentage with a 9-for-9 performance against Troy State University.
He was All-Southern Conference and was SSC-All Tournament. He was awarded the Spirit of '73 as voted by the student body and was also that years' UM MVP. He was All-Tournament in the Magic City Classic and Montevallo Tip-Off Tourney in 1972-73 and 1974-75. Averhart helped set a standard of excellence from with all Falcon basketball players will be ever judged.
KENNY GONZALES
Meritorious Service
Kenny Gonzales came to Montevallo as an assistant baseball coach in 1974. During his two years as an assistant, he helped develop the baseball tradition that exists today. He joined the Kansas City Royals as a talent scout, after three years as a college head coach.
In 1986 he counted one of the greatest sports coups in history by signing Heisman Trophy winner, Bo Jackson to a professional contract. He was also awarded the Ewing M. Kaufman award for outstanding contributions, to scouting and player development and was named 1986 Kansas City Royals Scout of the Year.
In 1988 he was named the TOPPS Baseball Card Scout of the Month. He signed two other No. 1 draft choices and in 1993 was promoted to Midwest Regional scouting Supervisor for the Royals. Though he left Montevallo in 1977, he left his own legacy. His son, David, played basketball for the Falcons from 1990-94.
WRIGHT "ARCHIE" INGRAM
Baseball
Wright "Archie" Ingram was not only one of the first Falcon baseball players for Alabama College Montevallo, he was one of the best. As outstanding athlete, Ingram set standards by which all others were measured. One of the most highly recruited athletes to come to UM, Ingram chose Montevallo over other schools to continue his baseball career.
As a pitcher for the Falcons, Ingram was overpowering. So much so that he recorded the lowest Earned Run Average of any pitcher before or after when he posted a phenomenal ERA of 0.98 in 1963.
BILL JONES
Meritorious Service
Bill Jones' first Falcon basketball team in 1969 recorded an overall record of 13-12. It was the first stepping stone in a coaching career that became the highest percentage of any coach in UM basketball history.
Jones coached the Falcon basketball team from 1969-1974 and amassed an overall record of 18-9,19-9,18-11 and 17-12 at UM. His overall coaching record was 493-310 and covered a period of 29 years.
LATANJA THOMAS
Volleyball
Thomas burst on to the scene as Montevallo from Huntsville, Ala., and made an immediate impact in UM volleyball.
She led her 1988 team to a forth place finish in the NAIA National Volleyball Championships in Topeka, Kansas, the highest finish for any UM volleyball team. Her senior season she was named 1st team NAIA All American, 1st team Russell Athletic All American, 2nd team Asics Tiger All American and NAIA 2nd team all tournament. She still owns the NAIA national tournament records for total blocks and block solos.
Latanja, a two-time All-District 27 selection, was selected as the District 27 female Athlete of the Year as a senior, as well as the NAIA District 27 Co-Player of the Year.
CHRIS WALKER
Baseball
Walker, one of the most prolific hitters to ever play baseball for Montevallo continues to hold nine UM baseball school records; .458, Highest Career Batting Average, .395, Most Times on Base, 136, Most Runs Batted in, 80, Most Home Runs in a Season, 25, Most Home Runs in a Career, 54, Total bases, 162, Highest Slugging Percentage, .964, and Highest on Base Percentage, .599.
He was All-district, All-Conference in 1985, 1987 and 1988, NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in 1987. In 1988 Chris was selected as University of Montevallo MVP, district Player of the Year, Area 5 Player of the Year and First Team All-American.
He is one of only four players since 1965 to earn back-to-back school MVP awards. Walker's outstanding performances set the standard for all who follow him.
