Falcons Split Rain Shortened Doubleheader

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (1-2) split a rain shortened doubleheader with the University of Alabama-Huntsville (2-1) at home. The Falcons won the opening game 5-4 in nine innings before falling 4-2 in just five and a half innings due to a heavy downpour. The Falcons were led on the day by junior Vincente Andrews (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) who was 4-for-6 at the plate over the two games with three runs scored and a double. Senior Kirk Waligora (Hartland, Mich./Lambuth University) was 3-for-7 while junior Andrew Hill (Helena, Ala./Pelham) went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Falcons Fall in Extras, 4-3

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (0-1) opened the 2012 season with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in 10 innings to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-0). The Falcons were led by junior Vincente Andrews (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) who was 2-of-5 at the plate with a homerun, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) was 3-of-4 at the plate with a run scored and a walk.

Shorthanded Falcons Fall to Georgia College, 67-59

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Without the services of the Peach Belt Conference leading scorer, D.J. Rivera (Philadelphia, Pa./Binghamton University), the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (15-6, 6-4 PBC) fell on the road to Georgia College and State University (12-7, 5-5 PBC), 67-59. The Falcons trailed the entire game and struggled offensively throughout the contest. UM hit just 29.7 percent of its shots from the field and a dismal 11.8 percent from three-point range. UM was led by senior Antoine Davis (Washington, D.C./College of the Desert) who scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards both of which were team highs. Freshman Ryan May (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) chipped in nine points while three others had six points each.

Falcons Tame Bobcats, 61-47

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team (8-11, 3-7 PBC) picked up a key Peach Belt Conference victory on the road at Georgia College and State University (4-15, 2-8 PBC), 61-47. The Falcons led almost the entire way using a balanced attack. UM had three scorers in double-figures and all eight Falcons who stepped on the court scored at least one point. Freshman Taylor Beverly (Brandon, Miss./Northwest Rankin) led the way with 18 points and five rebounds while hitting 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Junior Zena Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Northeast C.C.) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. She also led the team in steals with four and tied for the lead in assists with three. Senior Tiffany McClure (Montgomery, Ala./Tallahassee C.C.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Season Opener Moved Up Due to Inclement Weather

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team’s season opener has been moved to Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. The team was originally scheduled to open the season on Friday, Feb. 3 but will now host the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. for a single game and a doubleheader on Friday tentatively scheduled to begin at noon. The Friday doubleheader could be moved up depending on the forecast Friday morning. The Falcons will no longer take on UAH on Saturday due to inclement weather.
