Falcons Fall 9-4 Against No. 34 Carson-Newman
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (2-2) fell just three hits shy of No. 34 Carson-Newman College (4-0) but were unable to score the runs falling 9-4. The Falcons were led by freshman Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) who went 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBIs.
Senior Jeremy Jones (Troy, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace C.C.) hit a solo homerun for his first hit of the season while junior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Snead State C.C.), senior Ryan Norman (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) and junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.) all had doubles. Revell also added an RBI.
Junior Taylor Edwards (Pleasant Grove, Ala./Northwest Shoals C.C.) took the loss on the mound going 4.0 innings while striking out four and allowing just two runs. Junior Caleb McLeod pitched the next 3.1 innings while picking up a strikeout and walking one. The final pitcher was sophomore Mat Turner (Louisville, Ky./Labette C.C.) who went 1.2 innings with a walk.
The Eagles got the scoring started in the third inning as they hit a two run homerun over the left field fence. They struck again just two innings later as they hit a two RBI double to right center to take a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth as Daugherty led off with a solo homerun to left field. The Eagles countered with a lead-off homerun of their own in the top of the sixth to make it 5-1. The Falcons scored once again in the sixth as Revell doubled down the left field line to bring home junior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.).
C-N scored a run in each of the next two innings before the Falcons responded in the bottom of the eighth Daugherty singled up the middle to drive home Norman to make the score 7-3. The Eagles tacked on two more in the top of the ninth before Jones hit his solo homerun in the bottom half to end all the scoring at 9-4.
The Falcons hit .294 for the day compared to C-N's .394. They also gave up two unearned runs due to errors in the field.
The Falcons will try to avenge their loss tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they host Carson-Newman College once again.
