No. 18 Ouachita Baptist takes Series Win with 12-7 Victory over No. 30 Falcons
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The No. 30 University of Montevallo baseball team (15-8-1) succumbed to seven errors and fell 12-7 against No. 18 Ouachita Baptist University (18-7). Junior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Gulf Coast C.C.) had a break-out performance as he went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a bunt single. Freshman Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) continued his strong performance in the lead-off role with a 3-for-5 day with two doubles and two runs scored.
Freshmen Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) and Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) and junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.) led the team with two RBI each. Roney and Luckie each hit a two-run homerun to pick up their RBI while Headley had a couple of ground out RBI.
Luckie's homerun came in his only at bat as he entered in the bottom of the eighth as a pinch hitter and bombed one to right field.
Senior Brandon Aldridge (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills) picked up the loss on the mound as he started the game and went 3.1 innings while walking two and giving up two earned runs and five unearned. Junior J. Stoddard (Meridian, Miss./East Mississippi C.C.), freshman Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) and senior Heath Wilson (Boaz, Ala./Boaz) combined for the final 5.2 innings striking out three and walking just two.
The Falcons fell behind early in the game as the Tigers put up seven runs in the first inning as the Falcons committed four errors and gave up three hits. The Falcons picked up their first run in the second as Headley grounded out to second to score junior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.).
They tacked on another run in the fourth as Headley hit a nice sacrifice bunt to score Sosebee once again. Up 7-2 the Tigers responded once again scoring two runs in the top of the fifth as they picked up a pair of hits and an error to score their two runs.
The Falcons matched their two runs in the bottom half as Roney hit a bomb to left field to score himself and Daugherty. Two innings later the Falcons tacked on another run as junior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Snead State C.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Daugherty.
Once again up 9-5 the Tigers tacked two more runs on the board as they strung together three hits to score a pair of runs.
The Falcons responded again as Luckie hit his pinch hit homerun to score himself and Garcia. The Tigers scored one final time in the ninth as they took advantage of another Montevallo error.
The Falcons were unable to make the ninth inning comeback and fell 12-7.
The Falcons return to action Tuesday, March 10 at 2 p.m. as they host Columbia Union College in a doubleheader.
