Falcons Complete Series Sweep of Columbia Union with 17-6 Thrashing

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (18-8-1) used an explosive offense and some key pitching to take down Columbia Union College (3-7) for the third straight time, 17-6. Junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.) led the way going 3-for-3 with three RBI, a double, a triple and a run scored. He was just a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle. Junior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Snead State C.C.) went 3-for-5 with three RBI, a homerun and a run scored.

The Falcons had four homeruns on the day coming from Revell and seniors Dustin Rhodes (Starkville, Miss./Starkville), Jeremy Jones (Troy, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace C.C.) and Ryan Norman (Hoover, Ala./Hoover). Rhodes was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI while Jones went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, two stolen bases and three RBI. Norman came in late in the game and had only one at bat and made the most of it as he sent a towering fly ball deep over the left field fence.

Junior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.) got in on the action as well as he went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

The Falcons went 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts as they made it look easy on the base paths.

Freshman Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) got the start on the mound going 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and just one walk allowed. Despite leaving the game with the lead he was unable to get credit for the win since he didn't pitch the required five innings as a starter.  Junior Michael Fields (Belleville, Ill./Southwestern Illinois C.C.) took the win going the next two innings while walking one and giving up just one hit.

Five other pitchers split the final three innings while striking out five and walking just one.

The Falcons allowed two runs in the top of the first but quickly responded with four runs in the bottom half sparked by a two RBI double by Luckie. They added another run in the third as junior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Gulf Coast C.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Pioneers tied up the game in the fourth as they put up three runs to make it 5-5. The Falcons did not waste any time getting back in the game as they put up three runs of their own in the bottom half.

The Pioneers scored their final run in the fifth and its was matched in the bottom half as Luckie tripled to right centerfield and was drove home by Rhodes.

UM put up another three spot in the sixth before tacking on a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth. In the end the Falcons won 17-6.

The Falcons return to action Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. as they open up conference play at the University of West Florida.
