Falcons Fall to Stillman, 11-2
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (19-14-1) had its 15-game winning streak against Stillman College (10-9) broken as the Tigers handed the Falcons an 11-2 loss. The Falcons had won 15-straight match-ups between the two squads dating back to 2003. The Falcons had seven players each get a hit with freshman Corey Ellis (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills), junior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Gulf Coast C.C.) and senior Ryan Norman (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) each picking up a double.
The Falcons lone RBI came from freshman Joe Handley (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown). UM used eight different pitchers in the game with junior Michael Fields (Belleville, Ill./Southwestern Illinois C.C.) taking home the loss after an inning of work in which he struck out two and gave up four hits. Junior Heath Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala./UAB), freshman Matthew Rickels (Cahaba Heights, Ala./Spain Park) and junior Kyle Johanson (Bowman, Ga./Gordon College) each pitched a scoreless inning while Rickels picked up three strikeouts.
Stillman struck early and often as they scored three runs in the first and two more in the second. The added another run in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Their scoring ended in the sixth as they scored one final run. Up 11-0 the Tigers allowed the Falcons to plate a run each in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Falcons strung together three doubles in the eighth but were only able to score one run.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. as they travel to the University of North Alabama.
