Falcons Fall in Doubleheader with UAH, 10-7 and 4-2
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (21-17-1, 3-8 GSC East) dropped a pair of games today (April 4) to the University of Alabama-Huntsville (20-8, 3-4 GSC East), 10-7 and 4-2. In game one the Falcons were led by a pair of freshman Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) and Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover). Roney went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Daugherty was 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI. In game two it was junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.) who led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI.
Overall Luckie was the Falcons top performer at the plate with an overall 4-for-7 day with two runs scored and two RBI. Roney was 3-for-7 while Daugherty was 3-for-9. Seniors Jeremy Jones (Troy, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace C.C.) and Dustin Rhodes (Starkville, Miss./Starkville) each picked up two hits. Rhodes had a homerun and two RBI while Jones added an RBI.
On the mound juniors Caleb Mcleod (Pleasant Grove, Ala./Shelton State C.C.) and John Michael Caraway (Trussville, Ala./Gadsden State C.C.) got the starts. McLeod went in game one going 4.0 innings with five strikeouts and a walk while Caraway went in game two with 4.0 innings and three strikeouts with three walks. Freshman Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) came on in relief in game one picking up the loss and going 5.0 innings with three walks. Caraway got the loss in game two.
Junior Justin Aaron (Morris, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.) pitched 2.1 innings of relief in game two allowing just two hits and the final pitcher was junior Heath Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala./UAB) who went 0.2 of an inning while giving up two hits.
In game on the Falcons fell behind early but quickly recovered. The Chargers scored two runs in the first and were answered by the Falcons in the second. UAH added two more in the third but the Falcons once again responded with four runs in the bottom half to take a 6-4 lead.
The Chargers went on to score six runs over the final six innings while the Falcons were only able to produce one as the Chargers won 10-7.
Game two saw the Chargers jump out to a lead early again as they scored three runs over the first three innings. The Falcons responded with two runs in the fourth as Luckie hit a two-RBI single to left field to make the score 3-2.
The Falcons were unable to tie the game as the Chargers added an insurance run in the seventh and won 4-2.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, April 5 at 1 p.m. as they host the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
