Falcons Fall in Slugfest, 27-6

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (21-19-1) struggled to get going defensively while Columbus State University (20-15) was hitting on all cylinders. This combination led to a 27-6 victory for the Cougars. The Falcons produced 10 hits and scored five runs in the sixth but the damage had already been done as the Cougars cruised to victory.

The Falcons were led by senior Jeremy Jones (Troy, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace C.C.) who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and the only Falcons with more than one hit. Freshmen Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) and Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) were the only Falcons with extra-base hits as they each slugged a double. Daugherty added a pair of RBI.

On the mound freshman Mitch Holcombe (Oak Grove, Ala./Oak Grove) took home the loss going 2.0 innings with two strikeouts. Four other pitchers combined for the final seven innings while striking out four and walking just one.

The Falcons struck first as they plated a run in the first. Daugherty led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was then sacrificed to third and was brought home by a sacrifice fly from junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.).

The Cougars scored four in the second, six in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 13-1. The Falcons struck again in the sixth as they strung together five hits and a Cougar error to plate five runs. Sophomore Joe Prokop (Clanton, Ala./Chilton County) picked up the first RBI with a groundout to first. Luckie then scored on a wild pitch. Senior Dustin Rhodes (Starkville, Miss./Starkville) then crossed the plate on a throwing error by the third basemen. Then it was up to Daugherty who drove in two with a double down the left field line.

The Falcons went scoreless the rest of the way as CSU scored 14 more runs over the final three innings.  

The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. as travel to Stillman College for their sixth game in five days.
