Falcons End Skid with 11-4 Win over West Georgia
CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (22-22-1, 4-11 GSC East) ended its eight-game losing streak with a convincing 11-4 win over the University of West Georgia (13-24, 4-5 GSC East) in the road. The Falcons were led by freshman Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a hit by pitch. Freshman Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) and senior Ryan Norman (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) each chipped in three hits as well.
Headley was 3-for-4 with a homerun and one RBI. Norman was 3-for-5 with a double and a team-high three RBI. Sophomore Joe Prokop (Clanton, Ala./Chilton County) went 2-for-3 with two RBI as well.
On the mound a pair of Falcons combined for the victory. Junior Heath Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala./UAB) got the start and the win as he went 5.0 innings with a strikeout and no walks. Junior Heath Wilson (Boaz, Ala./Boaz) pitched the remaining 4.0 innings picking up a save and a strikeout.
The Falcons struck first scoring a lone run in the very first inning. Norman singled through the right side to score Daugherty and take an early lead. They added to their advantage in the third as Headley led off with a single and then advanced to third as Daugherty doubled to left center. They were each drove in by a pair of groundouts by junior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Snead State C.C.) and Norman.
The Falcons scored one more unanswered run in the fourth as Prokop singled through the right side to score junior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Bevill State C.C.). The Wolves first got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as they plated two runs to cut the Falcons lead to 4-2.
UM responded in a big way to the Wolves first scores as they pushed across six runs in the fifth to take a commanding lead. Headley led off the inning with a solo homerun to right field, the first of his career. Daugherty then doubled down the left field line and scored on an error by the pitcher. Norman then doubled in Revell who had reached second on the pitcher's error. Junior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Gulf Coast C.C.) got on the board with an RBI single that drove home Norman. Prokop then hit a sacrifice fly a batter later to score Garcia from third. Freshman Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) then knocked in Luckie with an RBI single to end the scoring..
The Wolves made a comeback attempt in the seventh but were only able to score two runs. The Falcons added one more run in the eighth as Revell grounded out to score Headley.
The Falcons return to action Tuesday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. as they host No. 20 Delta State University in non-conference action.
