Montevallo Drops Rematch with Columbus State, 12-3
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (22-28-1) fell in a rematch with future conference foe Columbus State University (25-20) on the road, 12-3. The Falcons were led by a trio of players who each had two hits. Junior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.), senior Jeremy Jones (Troy, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace C.C.) and junior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Gulf Coast C.C.) combined to go 6-for-11.
Freshman Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) picked up two RBI and a double while sophomore Joe Prokop (Clanton, Ala./Chilton County) had a solo homerun to account for the Falcons other run. The only other Falcon to gain a hit was junior Nelson Garcia, Jr. (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) who had a double.
On the mound junior Justin Aaron (Morris, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.) got the start, his third of the year. Aaron went 3.0 innings while striking out two and walking two others. He took home the loss dropping his record to 2-3. Junior Heath Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala./UAB) pitched the next 3.0 innings while striking out four and walking three. He allowed just two hits. Freshman Mitch Holcombe (Oak Grove, Ala./Oak Grove) pitched the next inning while getting a strikeout and giving up a pair of hits. Junior Michael Fields (Belleville, Ill./Southwestern Illinois C.C.) finished off the final inning with a strikeout and just one hit given up.
The Falcons fell behind early in the game as the Cougars jumped out to a 11-0 lead over the first four innings. The Falcons got a run on the board in the seventh inning as Prokop hit a solo homerun to left field to cut the deficit to 11-1. The Cougars responded in the bottom half with a run of their own to take a 12-1 lead.
UM then found itself down 12-1 with two outs in the ninth. Sosebee then singled to the shortstop. Freshman Scott Kaylor (Jemison, Ala./Jemison) then drew a walk to make it first and second with one out to play. Jones then singled through the left side to load the bases for Daugherty. Daugherty came through with a double that scored Sosebee and Kaylor. The Falcons ended their rally with a strikeout falling 12-3.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m. as they travel to Georgia College and State University.
