Falcons Awarded Two Gulf South Conference Honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team was awarded two honors by the Gulf South Conference. The Falcons were honored with the GSC East Division Freshman of the Year and awarded a spot on the All-Gulf South Conference East Division First Team. Former Hoover High School standouts Ryan Norman (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) and Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) helped lead the Falcons this season with Norman being a senior and Daugherty coming in as a freshman.
Norman cracks into the All-GSC East Division squad for the first time in his career after having a stellar senior season. He led the team in batting average (.412), homeruns (7), slugging percentage (.618), fewest strikeouts with over 100 at bats (21), on-base percentage (.506) and putouts (245). He also led the GSC in base stealers caught with 28. He also went on a 17-game hit streak midway through the season to lead the Falcons.
Daugherty becomes just the second player in school history to be named GSC Freshman of the Year. Former Montevallo outfielder Brantly Clay (2005-08) was honored as Freshman of the Year in 2005. Daugherty led the Falcons in hit by pitch (11), stolen bases (15), steal attempts (17) and total plate appearances (200). He was also third in the GSC in sacrifice hits with 10. He had a .329 batting average and spent most of the year in the lead-off role for the Falcons.
Norman ends his career after having one of the greatest seasons in Montevallo history behind the dish while Daugherty looks to improve on his freshman campaign with a move to the highly competitive Peach Belt Conference.
