Falcons Suffer First Loss of the Season, 12-2

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season as the University of West Florida (1-0) pounded out 12 runs compared to Montevallo's two. The Falcons had seven players who each had a hit while junior Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) was the lone Falcon to pick up an RBI.

Dabbs, Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Sumiton Christian), Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Albertville), Andrew Hill (Helena, Ala./Pelham), Joe Prokop (Verbena, Ala./Chilton County), Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) and Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope) all picked up hits in the game. Sosebee and Roney scored the two runs for the Falcons. Roney also added a stolen base.

The game started over an hour late which caused the pitchers to change their warm-up routine. It seemed to hamper Montevallo pitcher Joey Noro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) the most as he struggled early in the game and only made it through 2.1 innings. He struck out three while walking five and picked up the loss. Senior John Michael Caraway (Trussville, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) pitched 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk while sophomore Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) pitched the final 3.0 innings with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Argonauts struck first in the second inning as they picked up three runs off a pair of hits and a walk. They tacked on four more runs in the third thanks in part to a three-run homerun to left field by Greg Pron. Two innings later they added another run to go up 8-0.

UM finally broke through in the fifth as Sosebee and Revell singled to put runners on first and second. A botched double play throw allowed Sosebee to round the bases and score Montevallo's first run.

The Argos responded with a run of their own in the sixth to increase their lead to 9-1.

UM scored its second run of the game in the sixth as Roney hit a single through the right side and then stole second. A single from Dabbs through the right side allowed Roney to round third and head for home giving Dabbs the lone Montevallo RBI.

UWF tacked on a run in the seventh and then two in the ninth to close out the game 12-2.

The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m. as they host the University of West Florida for a doubleheader.
