Falcons Sweep Doubleheader with Bearcats
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (3-4) picked up a pair of wins over Northwest Missouri State University (0-2) this afternoon (Feb. 14), 15-5 and 7-2. The Falcons had 11 players with at least on RBI and six players with multiple hits. Seniors Heath Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) and John Michael Caraway (Trussville, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) picked up the wins on the mound while sophomore Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) and freshman Heath McGuirk (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) led the team with four RBIs each.
Senior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Dunedin) went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a homerun, three walks, four runs scored and two RBI. Senior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Albertville) was 3-for-7 with a homerun, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham) was 3-for-8 with a double, a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Senior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Sumiton Christian) was 2-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Daugherty was 2-for-7 with a double, a homerun, a walk, two runs scored and four RBI. Junior Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) was 2-for-4 with a homerun, an RBI, a walk and three runs scored.
Junior Scottie Deason (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) and senior Cory Luckie (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope) each had a double and an RBI. Freshman ChandlerTyree (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) and sophomore Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) each had an RBI.
Tapscott started game one and went 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. He gave up just five hits and only one earned run. He now leads the team with a 2-0 record. Caraway came into game two as a relief pitcher and pitched 2.2 effective innings giving up no hits and striking out three. The win was the first of the season for Caraway.
Senior Justin Aaron (Morris, Ala./Mortimer Jordan) started game two and went 3.0 innings while striking out one and walking one. He was relieved by junior Kyle Butler (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern) who went 3.0 innings while striking out three.
The Falcons jumped all over the Bearcats in game one of the doubleheader as they got out to a 15-0 lead before NWMSU could evening score a run. The damage began in the second inning when the Falcons drove across four runs off just two hits. UM drew two walks and two hit by pitches along with a pair of doubles from Sosebee and Daugherty.
UM's big inning came in the fourth when they plated 11 runs off seven hits and no Northwest Missouri State errors. Dabbs led off the inning with a solo homerun and was followed four batter s later by a three-run homerun from Dubberly. McGuirk also hit a three-run homerun later that inning as well. Then two batters later Daugherty hit a two-run homerun good for four homeruns in one inning.
The Bearcats scored four runs in the sixth and then another in the seventh but that would be all they could muster as Montevallo won 15-5.
The Falcons fell behind early in game two as the Bearcats had back-to-back hits to open the game which scored one run. Down 1-0 in the second the Falcons tied things up while Garcia led the inning off with a solo homerun. They tacked on three more in the third as UM opened the inning with four straight hits including a pair of doubles from Dubberly and Luckie.
The Bearcats cut the lead to just two in the fifth as they scored on a solo homerun.
UM added two more runs in the sixth. Garcia led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a Dabbs single. Garcia then scored on a groundout by Tyree. Dabbs later scored on a wild pitch.
The final run of the game came in the seventh as Revell hit a solo homerun to left centerfield.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 3:00 p.m. as they travel to Delta State University.
