Falcons Drop First Road Game of the Season to No. 14 Delta State, 19-4

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of Montevallo baseball team (3-5) dropped its first road game of the season to 14th-ranked Delta State University (3-1-1), 19-4. The Falcons were led by sophomore Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) who went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Sumiton Christian) also had two hits and an RBI as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Dunedin) picked up an RBI and a run scored as he was walked twice. Junior Joe Prokop (Verbena, Ala./Chilton County) had the only other Falcon RBI as he went 0-for-2 with a walk.

Seniors Nelson Garcia, Jr. (Tampa, Fla./Sickles), Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Albertville), junior Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) and sophomore Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) all picked up a hit.

Senior Caleb McLeod (Pleasant Grove, Ala./Pleasant Grove) started the game and took home the loss as he went 1.1 innings with two walks and seven runs given up. Junior Joey Noro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) pitched the next 2.2 innings while giving up three runs. He was replaced by senior Kyle Johanson (Bowman, Ga./Elbert County) who went 0.1 innings striking out one and walking two while giving up six runs. Sophomore Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) closed out the game going 3.2 innings while striking out two and walking four. He gave up three runs but no earned runs.

The Statesmen scored six runs in the very first inning and followed that up with runs in the second and third and two runs in the fourth. Down 10-0 the Falcons scored their first run in the fifth.

Garcia opened the inning with a walk and then was moved to third by a single from Dabbs. Prokop then hit an RBI fielder's choice to the pitcher that scored Garcia.

DSU responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 16-1 lead. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth and seventh. UM picked up their second run in the eighth as Headley singled to left field and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. He was moved to third by a Sosebee single and was driven home by a sacrifice fly from Garcia.

The Statesmen tacked on three more runs in the bottom half before the Falcons scored their final two runs in the ninth. Garcia, Jr. had a two-out hit to begin the rally. Revell then reach on an error by the shortstop and Garcia, Jr. moved to third. Headley then hit an RBI single to centerfield and advanced to second on the throw. Revell then scored on an RBI single by Sosebee.   

The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. as they take on the Statesmen in a rematch.
