Falcons Fall to No. 15 Delta State, 11-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (12-32) fell to the 15^th-ranked Delta State University (31-10-1) Statesmen, 11-1. The Falcons pounded out 10 hits but were only able to score one run which came in the final inning. The Statesmen had 16 hits and scored 11 times including two five-run innings. Sophomore Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) led the way for the Falcons going 3-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base.

Freshman Chandler Tyree (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) picked up the lone RBI in the game in the ninth inning. Senior’s Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Sumiton Christian) and Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Dunedin) each went 2-for-4 and their back-to-back singles to open up the ninth led to the lone Falcon run.

Senior Michael Fields (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) got the start for the Falcons on the mound as he went 7.0 innings with two strikeouts and four walks. He took home the loss as his record fell to 0-1 on the season. Freshman Kevin Richardson (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) pitched the final 2.0 innings while striking out two and giving up just one run.

The Statesmen and Falcons went scoreless through the first three innings but a four hit fourth for the Statesmen drove home five runs. DSU had two homeruns in the inning and took a 5-0 lead. Both teams went quiet for the fifth and sixth innings but once again the Statesmen put up a five-spot in the seventh. DSU used seven hits and one Montevallo error to score five runs and take a 10-0 lead.

The Statesmen would score one more run in the eighth to take an 11-0 lead before the Falcons could answer in the ninth.

UM opened the ninth with back-to-back singles by Garcia and Sosebee. After a strikeout the two UM runners moved to second and third on a balk by the DSU pitcher. A groundout by Tyree to second base drove home Garcia for the Falcons lone run of the game.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. as they host Georgia College and State University in the final Peach Belt Conference series of the season.
