Falcons Win Big in Season Finale, 10-1
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (22-26) ended the 2011 season with a 10-1 blowout of Tusculum College (33-18) at home. Prior to the game the Falcons honored its four seniors as well as its annual award winners. Kyle Butler (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern), Scott Deason (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park), Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) and Joey Noro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) were honored prior to the game for their service to the Montevallo program. UM's award winners were Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham), who was given the Gold Glove, Butler, who was named the Pitcher of the Year and Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Central) and Chris Ross (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) were named Co-Most Valuable Players.
UM had eight different players register hits in the win, six different players with at least one RBI and four different pitchers saw action. Ross, Peterson and Deason led the way with two hits each. They were all 2-for-4 at the plate. Ross' hits were a double and a homerun while Deason added a double. Ross had a pair of RBI and Peterson had a single RBI.
Freshman Justin Burgess (Tampa, Fla./The First Academy) hit his first career homerun in the seventh.
Butler started the game on the mound and went 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and just two hits given up. He did not allow a run as his record improved to 6-4 on the year. Three Falcons pitched the final three innings while allowing just a single run and three hits.
The Falcons dominated the base paths as they stole eight bags and were caught just once. Peterson led the way with three steals.
UM opened the scoring in the first as Peterson hit an RBI single to right field which scored Fulmer. The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the second. Dabbs scored the first run on an error from the right fielder. Sophomore Andrew Hill (Helena, Ala./Pelham) drove in a run with a groundout and Ross hit a solo homerun to put the Falcons up 4-0.
In the fourth Ross hit an RBI double down the right field line to give UM a 5-0 lead. The Falcons expanded their lead in the fifth with four runs off of just two hits. TC gave up three walks and a hit by pitch in the inning. UM scored one run on a passed ball and another on a wild pitch. The other two runs came off an RBI single from Dabbs and a sacrifice fly from freshman Pablo Martell (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas).
UM's final run came in the seventh as Burgess blasted a sole homerun to left field. The Pioneers scored their lone run in the eighth as the Falcons won 10-1.
The win ends the Falcons first season under head coach Chandler Rose. UM had a nine win improvement from the 2010 year and both the team batting average and team ERA improved. UM will return multiple all-conference worthy performers next season and will welcome some highly-touted recruits as the Falcons look to advance to their first Peach Belt Conference Tournament in 2012.
