AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (23-22, 16-13 PBC) split its final Peach Belt Conference doubleheader of the season on the road at Georgia Southwestern State University (11-33, 8-20 PBC). The Falcons took game one 6-2 while the Hurricanes won game two 6-0. The Falcons were led by sophomore Will Fulmer (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) who went 4-for-9 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Chris Ross (Pelham, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.) was 2-for-6 with a triple, two runs scored and three walks.
Junior Vincente Andrews (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) led the team in RBI with two as he went 1-for-7 with a walk and a double. Senior Blaine Rosenberg (Birmingham, Ala./Furman University) was 1-for-3 over the two games with a walk, a double and an RBI. Senior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) was 2-for-8 with a walk and a double.
On the mound junior Michael Shreves (Bradenton, Fla./State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota) took home the win in game one as he went 8.0 innings while scattering four hits and a pair of runs. He struck out three and allowed three walks. His record improved to 5-4 on the season. Senior Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) closed out the game pitching the final inning with a strikeout and one hit allowed.
In game two junior Nathan Flanagan (Tupelo, Miss./Itawamba C.C.) took home the loss as he went 3.0 innings with a walk and four runs allowed. His record fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Falcons got on the board in the second inning of game one as Rosenberg hit a two-out RBI double to right field to score freshman Vinny Rodriguez (Birmingham, Ala./Shades Valley). UM added a run in the fourth as junior Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham) hit a sacrifice fly to score Ross who had reached on a lead off single.
The Hurricanes got on the board in the fifth with a single run but the Falcons answered in the sixth as Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to score Ross. Ross had reached on a lead-off triple.
The Hurricanes immediately responded with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. UM answered again in the very next half inning as Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Zack Willoughby (Boaz, Ala./Boaz) who had reached on a single to left field.
UM added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as Fulmer hit an RBI single to score senior Kirk Waligora (Hartland, Mich./Lambuth University) who was pinch running for Rosenberg who reached on a lead-off walk. Andrews followed with an RBI double to centerfield which scored Fulmer and out the Falcons up 6-2.
Rich shut down the Hurricanes in the bottom half to secure the Falcons win.
In game two it was all Hurricanes as they scored two in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to secure a 6-0 victory. UM had just five hits in the game as the offense struggled.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow, April 21 at 12 p.m. as they close out their series with Georgia Southwestern.
