Fulmer Breaks PBC Record for Hits in a Conference Season in Loss

AMERICUS, Ga. – Sophomore Will Fulmer (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) of the University of Montevallo baseball team (23-23, 16-14 PBC) broke the Peach Belt Conference record for hits in a season for conference games only with 52. He was just 1-for-5 in the game today but his single to left field in the sixth inning gave him 52 hits for the season in PBC play which bested the previous record of 51 set by Tyler Evans of Armstrong Atlantic State University during the 2007 season. The Falcons fell on the road to Georgia Southwestern State University (12-33, 9-20 PBC), 9-6.

UM was led by junior Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham) who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a walk and a double. Senior Kirk Waligora (Hartland, Mich./Lambuth University) was 2-for-4 with an RBI while senior Chris Ross (Pelham, Ala./Jefferson State C.C.) was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.

Sophomore Alex Guilford (Montgomery, Ala./Alabama Christian Academy) took the mound for the Falcons and went 4.1 innings with a strikeout. He allowed eight hits and six runs during his outing. Junior Kameron Heiser (Collinsville, Miss./East Mississippi C.C.) pitched the next 3.0 innings with a strikeout and a pair of walks. He allowed four hits and two runs and was credited with the loss as his record fell to 3-5 on the season. Senior Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) pitched the final 0.2 of an inning with two hits given up and a run.

The Falcons fell victim to three, three-run innings during the game. On all three occasions the Hurricanes loaded the bases and were able to get either a bases clearing double or triple in all three situations to score their nine runs.

GSW struck first in the second with a bases clearing triple that put the Hurricanes ahead 3-0. UM got on the board in the fourth as senior Blaine Rosenberg (Birmingham, Ala./Furman University) drove in freshman Zack Willoughby (Boaz, Ala./Boaz) on a groundout. Willoughby had reached on a one-out single to centerfield.

UM tied the game up in the fifth as senior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) hit an RBI double down the left field line to score junior Vincente Andrews (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) who had reached on a walk. Then Ross hit a triple to right centerfield to score Peterson and tie the game at three.

The Hurricanes answered with a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth. UM scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Dubberly scored on a wild pitch and then Rosenberg was brought home by a single from Waligora to cut the lead to 6-5.

UM tied the game in the eighth as Dubberly once again scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at six. The Hurricanes answered with a bases clearing double in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead.

After a strikeout to open the ninth the Falcons drew a hit by pitch and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate but a strikeout and a ground out ended the Falcons chances as they fell 9-6.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. as they travel to Tusculum College for a three-game non-conference series.
