Falcons Split Doubleheader with #4 Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (24-24) split a close doubleheader with fourth-ranked Tusculum College (45-8) on the road. UM won game one 7-5 after scoring five runs in the eighth to pull ahead. The Pioneers took game two with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to narrowly escape, 7-6. UM was led by junior Andrew Hill (Helena, Ala./Pelham) on the day as he went 5-for-6, with an RBI, a stolen base, a hit by pitch and two runs scored. Sophomore Will Fulmer (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) was 4-for-9 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.

Senior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) was 2-for-6 with a pair of homeruns, five RBI, three walks, and two runs scored.

UM used five pitchers in game one including starter junior Michael Shreves (Bradenton, Fla./State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota). Shreves pitched 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. He allowed five hits and four runs including three earned. Freshman Mason Morris (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) picked up the win pitching 0.2 of an inning with no hits allowed. Senior Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) closed out the game taking home a save after pitching 1.0 inning of no hit ball.

In game two it was sophomore Alex Guilford (Montgomery, Ala./Alabama Christian Academy) who got the start and went 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. He allowed five hits and four runs including two earned. Rich took home the loss as he allowed two runs off of two hits in the final inning including one earned.

UM scored two quick runs in the first of game one as Peterson hit a two-run homerun in his first plate appearance against the nationally-ranked squad. TC responded with three runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and a single run in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.

In the eighth the Falcons opened up with back-to-back-to-back singles and then senior Blaine Rosenberg (Birmingham, Ala./Furman University) hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to two. After a ground ball out to move the runners to second and third senior Kirk Waligora (Hartland, Mich./Lambuth University) drew a walk to load the bases. Fulmer then hit a bases clearing double down the left field line to give the Falcons a 6-5 lead. Junior Vincente Andrews (Phenix City, Ala./Chattahoochee Valley C.C.) ended the scoring with an RBI single to centerfield.

The tandem of junior Kameron Heiser (Collinsville, Miss./East Mississippi C.C.) and Rich shut down the Pioneers in the eighth and ninth to secure the Falcons 7-5 victory.

In game two UM fell behind early as Tusculum scored two runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. UM responded in the sixth as Peterson hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to just one.

UM took the lead in the seventh as Hill hit an RBI single to score senior Josh Headley (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) and Hill then scored on a passed ball later in the inning to take a 5-4 lead.

UM added a run in the eighth as Headley hit a bases loaded single to score Fulmer.

The Pioneers scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to one and then tied the game on an RBI single up the middle in the ninth after a UM error and then a walk-off double to win the game 7-6.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow, April 29 at noon as they close out their series with Tusculum.
