Falcons Fall to No. 5 Arkansas-Monticello on the Road, 71-62
MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (7-8) fell just short of an upset against No. 5 University of Arkansas-Monticello (10-2) on the road, 71-62. The Falcons played near-even basketball with the Boll Weevils but fell victim to a late first half run that gave UAM a 10-point lead. The Falcons out-scored UAM 35-34 in the second half but were unable to overcome their first half deficit.
The Falcons were led by senior Brian Carlyle (Atlanta, Georgia) who had 13 points off of 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) scored 12 points while junior Freddy Little (Raleigh, North Carolina) chipped in 10. Junior Nate Flowers (Waldorf, Maryland) had nine points, five steals and five rebounds.
The Falcons hung with UAM throughout the first half but with 6:20 remaining and the Falcons up 23-22 the Boll Weevils went on a 15-4 run to close out the half. UM continued to play strong in the second half and was able to slowly cut the Boll Weevil lead to just four with 1:01 left in the contest. UAM hit its free throws down the stretch and held off the Falcons winning 71-62.
The Boll Weevils were led by Raymond Wright who scored 32 points and 13 rebounds.
The Falcons return to action Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to the University of West Georgia to open up conference play.
