Strong Second Half not Enough as Falcons Fall, 64-61
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (8-10, 1-2 GSC East) was never able to gain the lead against the visiting University of Alabama-Huntsville (10-5, 3-0) as they fell, 64-61. The Falcons were led by senior Terrill Humphrey's (St. Augustine, Florida) 17 points while junior Nate Flowers (Waldorf, Maryland) chipped in his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Falcons trailed by six at halftime and shot just under 30 percent from the field in the first half. They came out and hit 53.3 percent of their shots in the second half and were able to keep the game close but were unable to gain any type of lead.
Junior Freddy Little (Raleigh, North Carolina) scored all 15 of his points in the second half as he hit two three pointers to try and keep the Falcons hopes alive. The loss ends a 10-game win streak the Falcons held over UAH.
Junior Dorian Evans (Apalachicola, Florida), starting his first career game at Montevallo, dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Fellow newcomer Gerald January (Macon, Georgia) scored eight points grabbed four rebounds and blocked three shots.
The Chargers opened up the first half on a 15-2 run. The Falcons slowly fought their way back into the game eventually cutting the lead to three with 5:02 left. The Chargers added three more points to their advantage down the stretch to end the half, 29-23.
The second half opened with a three-point shot by UAH to extend their lead to nine. The Falcons once again slowly fought their way back into the contest eventually tying the game at the 4:40 mark. The two teams continued to battle with the Falcons not allowing the Chargers to get away. A couple clutch three pointers by the Chargers kept the Falcons at bay.
A three-pointer by Humphrey with 15 seconds left cut the UAH lead to just three. The Chargers missed the first half of a 1-and-1 to give the Falcons a shot at the tie. UM called timeout and tried to set up the game-tying play but the UAH defense stood strong and kept the Falcons from getting an uncontested shot. The three-point shot from the Falcons fell short giving the Chargers its first win over Montevallo in 11 tries.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Jan. 17 at 3:00 p.m. as they host the Carver Bible College.
