Montevallo Extinguishes the Blazers, 79-63

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (11-10, 3-2 GSC East) continued on its hot-streak beating Valdosta State University (15-4, 3-2 GSC East), 79-63. The Blazers came into the game with only three loses on their record and riding a three-game win streak. All that did not matter to the Falcons as they came out on fire and led from the opening buzzer to the end. Juniors Nate Flowers (Waldorf, Maryland) and Freddy Little (Raleigh, North Carolina) split the game in half as Flowers dominated the first half scoring 18 of his 23 points in the opening stanza while Little took over in the second half scoring 15 of his 20 points in the final period.

Flowers contributed his eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Little scored 20 points and came just two rebounds shy of the double-double with eight. He also dished out a team-high four assists. Senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) scored 12 points and gave out four assists while junior Gerald January (Macon, Georgia) scored 11 points including two dunks while going 5-of-8 from the field. He also led the team with four blocks.

The Falcons shot 53.6 percent from the field led by Flowers' 8-of-12 performance. The Blazers only connected on 37.5 percent of their shots and were 2-of-20 from three-point range good for 10 percent. The Falcons connected on seven long-range jumpers while hitting 36.8 percent from downtown.

The Falcons opened up the game with a 10-2 run and continued to hold onto a comfortable lead most of the first half. With 5:38 left in the first the Blazers had cut the lead to just four points but the Falcons responded with a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 15 with 21 seconds to play. VSU hit two free throws in the final seconds to end the half down 38-25.

The second half opened with the Blazers trying to fight their way back into the contest. At the 16:19 mark they cut the lead to just nine points but the Falcons once again responded with a 10-2 run to open up its biggest lead of the game up to that point at 52-35. The Falcons lead remained in double-figures throughout the rest of the period eventually ballooning to 18 with 24 seconds left on the clock. The game ended with the Falcons on top 79-63.

The Falcons return to action Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to the University of West Alabama for some more Gulf South Conference action.
