Falcons Slow Start Leads to 70-58 Loss
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (11-11, 3-3 GSC East) got off to a slow start as the University of West Alabama (9-11, 2-4 GSC East) out-scored the Falcons 22-5 over the first 10 minutes of the game. The Falcons went on to out-score the Tigers 53-48 over the final 30 minutes but it would not be enough to overcome the 17-point deficit.
The Falcons were led by junior Freddy Little's (Raleigh, North Carolina) 25 points while senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) chipped in 14.
UM was out-shot 52.9 percent to 43.9 while UWA hit 72.2 percent of their shots in the second half. The Falcons trailed by as much as 23 points and could not get within striking distance after the Tigers pulled away early in the first half.
The Falcons trailed by 12 before they scored their first point and quickly fell behind by 16 just a few minutes later. UM first broke the 10-point mark with 5:18 left in the first half and scored seven points over the final five minutes to trail 32-17 at halftime.
The Falcons cut the Tigers lead to just 10 points two minutes into the second half but UWA quickly went on an 11-2 run to increase their lead to 18. Their biggest lead came with 5:29 left in the first as the Tigers led 64-41. The Falcons closed out the game with an 8-0 run to cut the Tigers lead to 70-58.
The Falcons return to action Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to the University of Alabama-Huntsville for some more Gulf South Conference action.
