Falcons Strong Second Half Leads to 79-76 Victory
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (12-11, 4-3 GSC East) used a strong second half to down the number one team in the Gulf South Conference East Division, the University of Alabama-Huntsville (14-7, 5-2 GSC East), 79-76. Senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) scored a season-high 25 points and dished out a team-high five assists in the winning effort to lead the Falcons.
Junior Freddy Little (Raleigh, North Carolina) scored 16 points while senior Andre McMillan (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) scored a season-high 14 points off of 4-of-6 shooting from three point range. Junior Nate Flowers (Waldorf, Maryland) led the team in rebounding with nine.
The Falcons out-rebounded the Chargers 33-30 and out-shot them 51.8 percent to 45.1 percent.
The Falcons gained the early advantage in the game as they built up a 15-9 lead in the first seven minutes of play. The Chargers responded with a 13-2 run over the next 6:10 to take a 22-17 lead. They would hang on the final five minutes of the first half and ended the period with a 33-29 advantage.
The Falcons once again opened the half strong taking the lead just three minutes in. They were unable to build up a big advantage as both teams battled back-and-forth over the next 10 minutes. At the 6:21 mark the Falcons went on a 9-2 run to open up a six-point lead with just four minutes left.
The Chargers were able to cut the lead to just two points with 3:08 left by McMillan hit a clutch three-pointer on the next possession to open it back up to five. Humphrey was the next to score as he hit a three from distance to extend the lead to six. The Chargers tried to fight their way back in but the Falcons hit their free throws down the stretch to win 79-76.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. as they host Concordia College-Selma in a non-conference match-up.
