Second Half Free Throws Push Falcons Past Concordia-Selma, 84-77

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (13-11) trailed by two at halftime to Concordia College-Selma but came out in the second half and pushed past the Hornets, 84-77. The Falcons were led by junior Nate Flowers' (Waldorf, Maryland) ninth double-double of the season as he grabbed 16 boards and scored 24 points.

Junior Freddy Little (Raleigh, North Carolina) led all scorers with 25 points as he hit five three point shots. Senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) chipped in 16 points and four assists while hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Senior Brian Carlyle (Atlanta, Georgia) and junior Gerald January (Macon, Georgia) each blocked four shots while January added eight points and six rebounds.

The Falcons trailed early in the contest as the Hornets built up an 11-5 lead. UM was able to take its first lead of the game at the 13:56 mark as Little hit a three pointer to give the Falcons a 16-14 advantage. The two teams went back-and-forth until with 9:34 left in the first the Hornets went on an 8-0 run to open up a seven point lead.

The Falcons answered with an 8-0 run of their own to take back a one point lead but the Hornets were able to squeak out a two-point lead to end the half, 39-37.

The Falcons took over in the second half as they led most of the way. They were able to build up a seven-point lead just 10 minutes in but the Hornets would not go down easy. With just 52 seconds left the Falcons led by just three, 76-73. UM used strong shooting from the free throw line to take the win as the Falcons hit eight free throws in the final minute to win 84-77.

UM hit 20-of-24 free throws in the second half and shot 52 percent from the field to pull away.

The Falcons will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. as they host the University of North Alabama in GSC East Division action.
