Falcons Fall to Conference Leader Valdosta State, 74-64
VALDOSTA, Ga. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (14-14, 5-6 GSC East) fell at the hands of Valdosta State University (20-5, 8-3 GSC East), 74-64, but the teams hopes of a sixth straight trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament are still alive. With a win against the University of West Alabama on Feb. 28 at home the Falcons will enter the tournament as either the fourth or fifth seed in the Eastern Division.
The Falcons were led by junior Nate Flowers (Waldorf, Maryland) who had his 10th double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He also chipped in two blocks and a pair of steals. Senior Terrill Humphrey (St. Augustine, Florida) scored 12 points and dished out a game-high four assists.
The Falcons fell behind early but kept thing close for the opening five minutes. With 14:14 left in the first the Blazers began a 13-4 run the opened up an eight-point lead. VSU continued to build on its lead throughout the first half eventually ending the period with its largest lead of the game, 39-24.
The second half was much like the first but the Falcons were able to battle back in the early stages. They cut the lead to just nine with 14:58 to play but that sparked a 10-2 run by the Blazers to open things back up. The Blazers continued to lead by double-digits the rest of the way. The Falcons ended the game on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 74-64 as time ran out.
The Falcons return to action Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. as they host their final non-conference opponent Southeastern Bible College.
