Falcons Clinch Sixth-Straight Trip to Gulf South Conference Tournament

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (15-15, 5-7 GSC East) fell tonight to the University of West Alabama (13-14, 5-7 GSC East), 60-48 but still clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. This will be the sixth-straight trip for the Falcons as they will enter as the No. 5 seed in the East Division. The Falcons also honored five seniors who played in their final game inside Bank Trust Arena.

The Falcons were led by junior Gerald January (Macon, Georgia) who scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior Brian Carlyle (Atlanta, Georgia) had a team-high three blocks while scoring six points. The Falcons had three players score six points while two others scored five in the low-scoring contest.

UM only shot 30.4 percent from the field while the Tigers hit 48.8 percent of their shots.

The Falcons kept the game close for the first 15 minutes but quickly fell behind as the Tigers went on a 9-1 run to open up a 32-22 lead with just 2:25 left in the first. The Falcons went on to cut three points off that lead to finish the half down 33-26.

To begin the second half the Falcons cut the Tigers lead to 37-31 but UWA responded with a 9-0 run to take a 15-point advantage. With 7:10 left in the game the Falcons began an 8-0 run that cut the Tigers lead to 50-47 with just 2:24 to play. The Tigers would not allow the Falcons to get any closer as they went on to win 60-48.

The Falcons return to action Wednesday, March 4 against the University of Arkansas-Monticello at the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss.
