Young Picks Up 200th Career Victory with 74-60 Win over Clayton State

MORROW, Ga. - Head coach Danny Young of the 18th-ranked University of Montevallo men's basketball team (15-1, 5-1 PBC) picked up his 200th career victory with a 74-60 win on the road at Clayton State University (9-7, 2-4 PBC). Young now has a career record of 200 wins and just 71 losses. He has coached six of his eight teams to 23-plus win seasons and has had only two losing seasons in his eight-year career.

Nov. 16, 2001 - 101-60 win over Ohio Valley while head coach at Salem International University marked the first win of his career.

March 3, 2003 - 87-60 win in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament over Shepherd would mark his 50th career win as a head coach in only his second season at Salem International.

Nov. 15, 2003 - 77-61 win over Rollins in the UM Coca-Cola Classic marked first win as head coach at the University of Montevallo.

March 13, 2005 - 65-62 win in the second road of the NCAA South Regional over Eckerd College marked his 100th career victory in his second season at Montevallo.

Feb. 17, 2007 - 101-63 win at West Florida marked his 150th career win as a head coach.

The Falcons were led in tonight's (1/20) game by senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who scored 21 points off of seven three pointers. He also had five rebounds in the win. Junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) chipped in 17 points, four rebounds and three assists while senior MarkPlaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) was the final player in double-figures with 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks.
The Falcons shot 43.4 percent from the floor and held Clayton State to just 31.9 percent.
The Lakers led most the first half but were unable to hold back the Falcons late in the period as UM stormed back and took a three-point lead with nine seconds remaining off a Plaza three-pointer.
The second half began to roll Montevallo's way from the beginning. UM opened up the period with a 12-0 run fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Little. The Falcons were able to push their lead to 18 over the next few minutes as they led 50-32 with 13:04 left in the game.
The Lakers then went on an 18-3 run to cut the Falcons lead to just three with 6:39 left in the game. A lay-up and free throw by Plaza pushed the Falcons lead back to six and the Falcons never looked back as they extended their lead back up to 15 with 2:19 remaining.
UM hit its free throws down the stretch and came away with a 74-60 victory for their head coach Danny Young.
The No. 18 Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m. as they host Georgia College and State University in a key Peach Belt Conference contest. The Bobcats are 12-2 overall and 5-0 in Peach Belt Conference action.
