No. 7 Augusta State Downs Falcons, 61-40


AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (19-4, 9-4 PBC) scored just three points in the final 12:44 against seventh-ranked Augusta State University (22-2, 14-1 PBC) and fell 61-40. UM cut the Jaguars lead to just one with 12:44 left in the second half and then suffered one of its worst droughts in recent memory as they hit just one field goal and one free throw the rest of the game. The Falcons were led by junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) who scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards.

Senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) had nine points and five boards while juniors Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) and Demarcus Richard (Portland, Ore./Jefferson) each scored eight. Senior MarkPlaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) had six assists and seven boards.

The Falcons shot just 30.2 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from three-point range and 44.4 percent from the free throw line.

The Jags opened up the game with a 10-3 run but the Falcons immediately responded with a 8-2 run to cut the lead to just one with 11:30 to play in the first half. ASU then went on a 13-2 run to increase their lead to 12. The lead remained around the 12-point mark the rest of the first half. Richard hit a fade-away bank-shot three pointer with eight seconds remaining to cut the Jags lead to just eight heading into intermission.

UM opened the second half with 13-4 run that once again cut the ASU lead to just one. From that point on the Jags went on a 23-3 run that ended the game 61-40.

The Falcons will return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m. UM travels to North Georgia in a key Peach Belt Conference Western Division match-up.
