Falcons Use Total Team Effort to Defeat Southeastern Bible, 107-79
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (1-0) opened up the season with a dominating 107-79 win at home over Southeastern Bible College (0-3). The Falcons had eight scorers in double figures and had all 13 players in the game score at least one point. The Falcons were led in scoring by senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who had 14 points to go along with five assists. Senior MarkPlaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) dished out a game-high 10 assists while scoring eight points as well.
Plaza also tied for the lead in steals with three. Junior Ronald Severtsgaard (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while running mate Alex Lovell (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) chipped in 12 points and eight boards. Junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) chipped in 11 points while going 5-for-8 from the field. Junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech), senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside), junior Chauncey Thompson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Notre Dame) and sophomore Ryan Westbrooks (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) all scored 10 points.
The Falcons dominated play from the beginning as they started the game with a 9-0 run and never looked back. The Falcons had a 10-point lead just under four minutes into the game and widened that margin to 25 over the next 10 minutes as they led 57-32 with 3:59 left in the half. The first half ended with the Falcons well in control at 63-43.
The second half saw much less scoring but the Falcons continued to control the pace. SEBC opened the second half with a three-point shot which sparked the Falcons to go on a 15-2 run capped off by a huge flush from January to give the Falcons a 78-48 lead. UM continued to keep a steady 30-point lead most of the second half. The Falcons largest lead came at the 7:36 mark when UM was up 93-58.
UM broke the 100-point mark off a reverse dunk by senior Jordan Hutchison (Hazel Green, Ala./Hazel Green) with 1:48 left in the game. He drove under the basket and used his right hand to jam the ball through the net to give the Falcons a 101-71 lead. The game ended with the Falcons up 107-79.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Miles College for a non-conference match-up.
