Falcons Dominate Shaw to Remain Undefeated, 99-89

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (7-0) used an explosive first half to put away the visiting Shaw University Bears (4-2), 99-89. The Falcons held a double-digit lead for all but three minutes of the game as they out-scored the Bears 55-28 in the first half. Two Falcons had standout performances as junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) and senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) each scored over 20 points.

Dortch led the team with a career-high 28 points. He was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line and hit 4-of-6 three point attempts. Overall he only missed three shots the entire game including free throws. He also tied for the team lead in assists with four. Little chipped in 24 points which he scored all in the first half. He was 4-of-4 from the free throw line and hit six three pointers. Like Dortch he only missed four shots the entire game.

Senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) scored 14 points and led the team with three steals. Junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) chipped in nine points and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line.

The Falcons scored 35 points off turnovers compared to Shaw's 15. They also forced 21 turnovers while giving up just 14.

The Falcons opened the game with a 22-4 run and never looked back as they never trailed in the game. Their first half lead would balloon all the way to 29 as they led 50-21 with 1:43 left in the period. The Bears were able to cut it down to 27 at the break as the Falcons led 55-28.

In the second half the Falcons pushed their lead to 32 as they led 85-53 with 9:36 left in the game. After subbing out most of the starters the Bears began to come back and were able to trim the Falcons lead to just 10 as they ended the game 99-89.

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. as they host Carver Bible College.
