Falcons Dominate the Paint in Win, 79-53


MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team (9-0) remained unblemished after dismantling Miles College (1-6) for the second time this season. The Falcons controlled the paint out-scoring the Golden Bears 46-8 in the paint. UM's frontcourt was led by senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) and junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) who each scored 15 points in the win.

January was 7-of-11 from the floor with eight rebounds and a team-high four blocks. Coleman chipped in seven rebounds while going 7-for-12 from the floor. Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) had 14 points all of which he scored in the second half. He also dished out three assists. Junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) had 14 points and seven rebounds from his guard position.

The final Falcon in double-digits was junior Chauncey Thompson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Notre Dame) who scored 10 points off of 4-of-5 shooting. Senior MarkPlaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) dished out a team-high nine assists in the win.

The Falcons held the Golden Bears to just 27.7 percent shooting from the floor and 20.0 percent from three point range.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading the lead. The Falcons led for the majority of the period but were unable to pull away as the first half ended with the Falcons up 31-29.

The second half opened with the Falcons going on a 20-6 run to open up a 14-point lead. From that point forward the Falcons controlled the pace of the game and were able to slowly grow their lead to as much as 28. The game ended with the Falcons just two points shy of their largest lead 79-53.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2:00 p.m. as they travel to the University of West Florida who they beat earlier this season.
