Falcons Capture First Team Title Since 2007
VILLA RICA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s golf team picked up its first team title since the spring of 2007. The Falcons topped the field at the University of West Georgia Invitational this past weekend and senior Jon Henderson (Rainsville, Ala./Plainview) picked up his first individual title of the year. The Falcons outlasted five other teams to win by two strokes while Henderson used just a one stroke cushion to top the 34 person field.
The Falcons finished with four of the top-eight golfers in the tournament including Henderson, sophomore Gonzalo Gambertoglio (Cordoba, Argentina/Instituto General San Martin), senior Tripp Cash (Troy, Ala./Pike) and sophomore Aaron Ebert (Huron, Ohio/St. Mary's Central Catholic).
Henderson led all the golfers with a two round score of 148 which was just four strokes over par. Gambertoglio finished tied for fourth with a 152 while Cash and Ebert tied for sixth with a 153.
Freshman Mariano Lepori (Posadas, Argentina) finished tied for 11th with a 156. The only other Montevallo golfer to compete was junior Ruwaldt Viljoen (Johannesburg, South Africa/Dainfern College) who finished tied for 15th with a score of 159.
The Falcons beat former conference foe and host the University of West Georgia by just two strokes. The rest of the field was over 25 strokes behind UWG as Northwood finished third, University of St. Francis finished fourth, Young Harris C.C. in fifth and Belhaven College in sixth.
The Falcons will return to action this weekend as they travel to the Lander Bearcat Invitational in Greenwood, S.C.
