Falcons Suffer First Loss of the Season, 2-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the 2009 season as it dropped a hard-fought battle with Eckerd College (1-1), 2-1. The Falcons dominated much of the play but could not find the equalizer late in the match.

Freshman forward Arran McCarthy (Lancashire, England/Preston North End) scored Montevallo's lone goal as he tied the game at one midway through the second half off assists from Austin McIntosh (Sheffield, England/All Saint Catholic) and Phil Jackson (Lincolnshire, England/Queen Elizabeth's).

The Falcons let a few small mistakes lead to EC goals. The first came 30 minutes into the game as the Tritons took a quick free kick and passed it off to the top of the box and fired a shot past the Montevallo defenders.

"When you play good teams and you don't play well enough over 90 minutes and you make mistakes you are not going to win the match," said head coach Ryan Pratt. "We made two mistakes and against good teams that's all it takes."

The Tritons second goal came late in the second half as Colin Kuhn send a cross into the box that was pushed past the Montevallo keeper to secure a 2-1 victory.

The Falcons out-shot the visiting Tritons 17-8 and earned 12 corner kicks to EC two. UM had numerous offensive chances late in the game but were unable to find the back of the net. EC's goalkeeper made seven saves on the night.

The Falcons return to Varsity Field this Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2:00 p.m. as they host Florida Southern College.
