UM Slams Moccasins, 6-1
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (3-1) returned to its winning ways with a 6-1 thumping of Florida Southern College (0-1). The Falcons were led by junior Petar Triva (Split, Croatia/Second Language Gymnasium) who picked up his first hat trick as a Falcon. UM dominated play throughout the contest and held FSC to just six shots and two on goal.
Triva got the scoring action started early as junior Austin McIntosh (Sheffield, England/All Saint Catholic) took a throw-in from the sideline and knocked it off of Triva's head for the go ahead goal. Just over a minute later a Falcon attacker was taken down inside the FSC box which led to a penalty kick by junior MilanPualic (Subotica, Serbia/Srednja Ekonosmka Skola School). Pualic buried the shot and is now 2-2 in penalty kicks this season.
The Moccasins struck for their lone goal in the 33rd minute as Jovaughn Howard lost the ball in the attacking end but was able to win it back and fire it into the goal. The half would end with the Falcons leading 2-1.
Triva got the action started in the second half as he hit a one-timer from junior Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview Secondary School) who was streaking down the right side. Just over a minute later the Falcons struck again as junior Alex Ghoja (Elkmont, Ala./Bob Jones) took a pass from McIntosh and buried it into the back of the net. The initial pass to McIntosh came from Pualic on a free kick.
Pualic picked up his fourth point of the day as he ran down the right side and fed Triva in the middle for his third goal of the day in the 76th minute.
The final goal came with less than nine minutes to play as Ghoja struck again off a corner kick from junior James Steer (Sheffield, England/Westfield School).
Junior Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) did most of the work in goal picking up one save but he was replaced late in the game by fellow junior David Esser (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain).
The Falcons out-shot the Moccasins 20-6.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to Flagler College to play in their first Peach Belt Conference game.
