Falcons Battle to 2-2 Tie at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (3-2-1) battled to a tough 2-2 tie on the road at Newberry College (1-4-1). The Falcons out shot Newberry 24-18 en route to the tie. The Falcons were led by junior Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview Secondary School) who scored one of Montevallo's goals and assisted on another.
The Falcons struck first at the 27:44 mark of the first half as Foster stole the ball from a Newberry defender and then deked the keeper for the go-ahead goal. UM kept the 1-0 lead all the way till halftime. Newberry broke their scoring drought just six minutes into the second half as Adrian Ochoa tapped in a header from the opposite side of the goal.
The Falcons retook the lead just 10 minutes later as sophomore Matt Maughn (Toronto, Ontario/St. Marcellinus) kicked in a cross from Foster. The entire play was set-up by a free kick from MilanPualic (Subotica, Serbia/Srednja Ekonosmka Skola School).
Newberry tied it up again just nine minutes later as Marvin Torvic headed in a free kick.
The score remained 2-2 for the final 20 minutes of regulation and the two 10 minute periods of overtime.
Junior Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) made six saves in the effort while allowing just two goals.
The Falcons return to action this Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. as they travel to No. 16 Tusculum College.
