Falcons Shutout No. 25 West Florida, 1-0
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (4-2-1) shutdown the high-powered offense of No. 25 University of West Florida (4-2-1) 1-0. The Falcons used a strong performance from junior goalkeeper Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) and got the game-winning goal from fellow junior Petar Triva (Split, Croatia/Second Language Gymnasium) with three minutes left in the first half.
The Falcons were out-shot 19-7 and were only able to get two shots on goal but that was all they needed as they downed rival West Florida on the Argonauts home field. Mueller was tremendous in goal making six saves and playing the entire 90 minutes.
Triva was the right man in the right spot as James Steer (Sheffield, England/Westfield School) fired a shot off the right post that rebounded to Triva's feet for a quick goal with just 3:30 left in the first half.
The Falcons defense came up big in the second half as junior Austin McIntosh (Sheffield, England/All Saint Catholic), senior Cruyff Dos Remedios (Mississauga, Ontario/Cardinal Newman), junior Nathan Archard (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom) and sophomore Juan Lemos (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) helped hold down the back line as UWF attacked firing 10 shots and earning seven corner kicks in the second half.
Triva and junior MilanPualic (Subotica, Serbia/Srednja Ekonosmka Skola School) led the team in shots with two each.
Triva is now tied with junior Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview Secondary School) for the team lead in points with 11 and leads the team in goals with five.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. as they host UNC Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference match-up.
