Falcons Downed on the Road, 2-1
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (4-4-1) fell to the University of Alabama-Huntsville, 2-1, on the road. UM fell behind early and had a player sent off in the 24th minute of the game which caused the team to play a man down the rest of the way. The Falcons lone goal came from sophomore Phil Jackson (Lincolnshire, England/Queen Elizabeth's) off a penalty kick in the 86th minute of play.
The Falcons fell behind early when the Chargers were awarded a penalty kick in the 6th minute of the game. Tomokai Matsuo knocked home the free strike to put the Chargers ahead 1-0. Just 18 minutes later a Falcon player was sent off with his second yellow card which caused the Falcons to have to play a man down from 67 minutes of the game. The half ended with the Chargers up 1-0 and a 10-6 advantage in shots.
In the second half the Chargers struck first again as Devin Schleif fired home a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to put UAH up 2-0. The Falcons continued to push and were finally rewarded in the 86th minute as Phil Jackson was awarded a penalty kick which he sent in with ease. The Falcons attempted comeback fell short as the buzzer sounded to end the game 2-1.
The Falcons outshot the Chargers 17-16 and had six shots on goal compared to the Chargers five. Junior Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) made three saves in net. Junior Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview Secondary School) led the team with six shots while junior Alex Ghoja (Elkmont, Ala./Bob Jones) and Jackson each had three.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2:00 p.m. as they travel to Francis Marion University for a Peach Belt Conference contest.
