Two Second Half Goals Lead to Falcons Victory, 2-0

FLORENCE, S.C. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (5-4-1, 1-2-0 PBC) picked up its first Peach Belt Conference victory in school history 2-0 over host Francis Marion University (5-3-2, 1-1-1 PBC). The Falcons got a pair of second half goals to upend the Patriots 2-0. Sophomore Phil Jackson (Lincolnshire, England/Queen Elizabeth's) and junior Alex Ghoja (Elkmont, Ala./Bob Jones) provided the much-needed firepower to defeat the Patriots.

The Falcons and Patriots played a solid first half with neither team lighting up the scoreboard. The Falcons had two shots on goal while the Patriots only managed one shot on the Montevallo net. The second half was another defensive battle but just five minutes into the session a Montevallo attacker was taken down inside the FMU box which led to a penalty kick from the always steady Jackson. Jackson delivered on his second penalty kick of the season putting the Falcons ahead 1-0.

18 minutes later it was Ghoja who got in on the action as Jackson picked up his third point of the game as he fed Ghoja with the ball who fired it past the keeper.

Junior Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) was solid in net for the Falcons as he picked up two saves, one in the first and one in the second, en route to a shutout victory. The shutout marked the third of the season for Mueller.

Freshman Arran McCarthy (Lancashire, England/Preston North End) led the team in shots with two while five others each had one.

The Falcons return to action Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to Clayton State University for a Peach Belt Conference contest.
