Second Half Goal Lifts Falcons over Lander, 2-1

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (9-5-1, 5-3-0 PBC) used goals from junior Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview Secondary School) and freshman Arran McCarthy (Lancashire, England/Preston North End) to defeat Lander University (8-5-1, 5-1-1 PBC) who had previously been unbeaten in the Peach Belt Conference. The loss was the first for the Bearcats since Oct. 7 when they lost in double-overtime to Anderson.
The Falcons and Bearcats played a back-and-forth first half as both teams scored goals and the Bearcats took a 7-4 advantage in shots.
UM struck first as Foster beat the Lander keeper to take a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of play. Just 50 seconds later the Bearcats tied the game with a shot from Aaron Brittain and the score remained that way for the rest of the first half.
The second half featured less shots and one less goal as the Bearcats out-shot the Falcons 4-3. UM scored the lone goal in the second stanza just 14 minutes into the half as McCarthy broke behind the defense off an assist from MilanPualic (Subotica, Serbia/Srednja Ekonosmka Skola School) and deked the keeper for an easy tap-in.
The Falcon defense stood strong the final 31 minutes as they kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the 2-1 win. Junior Robert Mueller (Kileen, Texas/Kileen) took home the victory in net making one save.
UM was led in shots by Foster and junior Daniel Pelletier (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) who each had two.
The Falcons return to action Thursday, Oct. 29 at 2:00 p.m. as they travel to Shorter College for their final regular season contest.
