AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team (10-3-4, 5-1-2 PBC) closed out the 2011 regular season with a dominating 4-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University (3-11-2, 0-7-1 PBC). The Falcons secured the #2 seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and are awaiting the conclusion of the Clayton State University and USC Aiken match which will be played at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Oct. 29). If Aiken wins the Falcons will host Aiken on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. If Clayton wins the Falcons will host Francis Marion University at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1.
The Falcons got rolling early as senior Phil Jackson (Lincolnshire, England/Queen Elizabeth's) scored off an assist from freshman Alex Morton (Hoover, Ala./Hoover). The Falcons waited until the 43:32 mark to strike again as senior Tyson Eyo (Liverpool, England/Florida Tech) used a flick to beat the defense and then beat the GSW keeper to put the Falcons up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Hurricanes held the Falcons scoreless most of the second half but with less them eight minutes to play junior Mike Rinzema (Brampton, Ontario/Humber College) scored off an assist from junior Steven Didik (Hudson, Fla./Pasco-Hernando C.C.). Despite the 3-0 lead UM was not finished as freshman Patrick Dougall (Petit Valley, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) scored a goal off an assist from junior Alwyn Adams (Raymore, Mo./Johnson County C.C.) with just 2:21 left in the match.
UM out-shot the Hurricanes 16-6 and had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. UM committed just eight fouls in the game while GSW had 16 and was given three yellow cards.
The Falcons will await the conclusion of the Clayton State, USC Aiken match to see who they will take on in the First Round of the PBC Tournament. The Falcons are the defending PBC Tournament Champions.
