INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Fresh off a Peach Belt Conference tournament championship, the University of Montevallo men's soccer team earned its seventh trip to the NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament in program history following the announcement of the 35-team field Nov. 5.
The Falcons (13-4-2) are the No. 5 seed in the Southeast Region portion of the Super Region 2 of the NCAA Division II tournament. Montevallo will face No. 4 seed Wingate University (10-5-1), a member of the South Atlantic Conference, in the first round of the Super Region 2 tournament Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to face Southeast Region No. 1 seed Lander University (12-2-2), which will host the first two matches, in the second round of the Super Region 2 tournament Sunday, Nov. 11 at noon.
Montevallo had as strong a finish to the season as any team in the Southeast Region, going 7-1-1 in their last nine matches including the run to the conference tournament championship.
"I think it's a great honor and it's well deserved," said Montevallo coach Ken Hassler. "Our boys played extremely well this year. We're excited about the opportunity to compete for the National Championship."
The NCAA Division II men's soccer Final Four will be held Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., the site where the Falcons made a run to the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship.
Four Peach Belt Conference schools advanced to the Southeast Region of the Super Region 2 tournament, which set a new conference record. Host Lander University is the top seed, followed by Flagler College as the No. 2 seed.
Mars Hill College, out of the South Atlantic Conference, is the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a 14-2-4 record. UNC Pembroke, a Peach Belt Conference school, is the No. 6 seed with a 11-5-1 record.
The bid marks the third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II tournament for the Falcons, who hosted a NCAA Division II tournament match in 2010.
The Falcons also participated in the NCAA Division II South Region tournament in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 as a member of the Gulf South Conference.
Montevallo claimed the South Region championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II national semifinal match in its best showing in the NCAA tournament in 2007.
