Falcons Sign Four to New Mens Cross Country Team
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo men’s cross country head coach Michael Marquardt announced the signing of four recruits for the 2010 season. Mark McDonald, Justin Arsement, Matthew Corn and Evan Brock will all be part of the first men’s cross country team at UM since 1966.
“I am excited to introduce our first four young men that have committed to be a student-athlete at our university,” said coach Marquardt. “I believe this says something about their character and work ethic because they are willing to build a program from scratch. The reputation of our school, the work of our admissions team, and our campus sold itself. I have found out over the years it is easy to recruit young athletes to our school once they get on campus. We will be proud of these guys for what they will accomplish on the cross country course but they will also excel in the classroom.”
Mark McDonald competed at Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama and will enter as a freshman in 2010. He has a personal best time of 4:43 in the 1600. He also ran a 10:10 in the two mile and 16:56 in the 5k. He finished 25th at the Alabama State Championship Meet for 6A.
Justin Arsement prepped at Acadiana High School in Lafayette, Louisiana and will also enter as a freshman in 2010. He has a personal best time of 4:55 in the 1600. He also ran a 10:55 in the two mile and 17:16 in the 5k. He also qualified for the State Championship meet in Louisiana.
Matthew Corn attended Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, Mississippi. He has a personal best of 17:57 in the 5k and qualified for the state meet in Mississippi. He was named to the All-Rankin County Cross Country Team and the All-District Team. He will join the squad as a freshman.
Evan Brock attended Fairhope High School in Fairhope, Alabama. He was a two-year member of the varsity track and cross country teams. He qualified for the state cross country meet in Alabama in 2009. He helped his team to a second place finish at the Baldwin County Championships in 2009 as well. He will also enter 2010 as a freshman.
“I fully expect Mark, Justin, and Matthew to come in and compete for top 25 spots at our conference championships,” said Marquardt. “I know it is a huge adjustment for freshmen men to bump up to an 8k race but I believe these young men are up to the challenge. Evan has done a tremendous job over the last couple of years at his high school and I look forward to him improving a lot his freshman year and contending for a top 30 spot by his sophomore year. I am excited to work with these guys and I cannot wait until August to coach my first men's team!”
