Falcons Capture First Peach Belt Conference Win in Program History, 70-59

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (8-5, 1-2 PBC) got back to its winning ways picking up a hard-fought 70-59 victory over visiting North Georgia College and State University. The Falcons used a late first half comeback to take control of the game and never trailed again. The win is the first Peach Belt Conference win in program history and it also matches the Falcons win total from a season ago. UM was led by senior Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) who had 16 points off of five three-pointers. She also dished out three assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Senior guard Alex Sanabria (Miami, Fla./Miami) chipped in 13 points, a team-high five assists and a game-high four steals. Junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) fell just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds while Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) suffered the same fate with 12 points and eight boards. Jones also chipped in three assists and three steals.

The Falcons shot 41.3 percent from the floor while holding NGCSU to just 34.0 percent. UM controlled the paint outscoring the Lady Saints 26-12 in the post.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead punctuated by a Lewis three-pointer but the Lady Saints used a 14-0 run to take a 14-5 lead with just 12:46 to play in the first half. NGCSU was able to up that lead to 10 with 5:50 remaining and held that double-digit lead until the 4:28 mark when the Falcons began a 16-0 run to end the first half. UM trailed 30-20 with 4:28 left in the game and used points from five different players to take a 36-30 lead into halftime.

UM never trailed in the second half as they pushed their lead up to as much as 15 points late in the period. The Falcons used a strong defense to hold the Lady Saints to only six field goals in the second half and to 30 percent shooting. UM also forced 11 turnovers in the second half which helped maintain their double-digit lead.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 16 at 12:30 p.m. as they travel to Flagler College for another tough Peach Belt Conference contest. Flagler is 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in PBC play.
