Late Second Half Run Downs Falcons, 64-54

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (14-12, 7-9 PBC) dropped a hard fought contest with Georgia College and State University (19-7, 12-4 PBC) on the road, 64-54. UM was able to cut the Bobcat lead to just one point with 10:53 left in the game but a 13-0 run by GCSU dashed the Falcons hope for the upset. The Falcons were led by junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) who had 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Alex Sanabria (Miami, Fla./Miami) had 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists.

Senior Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) and junior Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) each had nine points. Jones chipped in five rebounds and three steals as well. Senior Manal Cali (Northampton, England/Northampton School for Girls) scored six points and grabbed six boards in the effort.

The Falcons won the battle in the paint outscoring the Bobcats 26-10 and also won the second chance points battle 12-6. The biggest difference between the two teams was the three-point attack. The Bobcats shot 45.8 percent from three-point range which was almost 10 percentage points higher than their average from the field. The Falcons shot just 26.3 percent from three-point range.

The game began with both teams battling for the lead. Neither squad gained much of an advantage in the opening 10 minutes. With 9:31 left in the first half and the Falcons up by two GCSU went on a 12-1 run that last four minutes and gave the Bobcats a 29-20 lead.

UM was unable to cut into the nine-point deficit in the final five minutes of the half. UM entered the locker room down 36-27.

The Falcons started the second half with a bang as Lewis hit a three followed by a Sanabria jumper. UM had cut the Bobcats lead to just four and that's were it would remain most of the opening 10 minutes. A three by Lewis at the 10:53 mark cut the GCSU lead to just one but the Bobcats would respond with a 13-0 run that lasted almost seven minutes and gave them a 60-46 advantage with 2:51 to play.

UM worked to get it to within eight points but that would be as close as the Falcons would come as GCSU won 64-54.

The Falcons close out the 2009-2010 regular season this Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. as they host Columbus State University with a playoff berth on the line. The Cougars are 16-10 overall and 10-6 in Peach Belt Conference play.
