Falcons Open Up Season with Impressive Win, 81-67
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (1-0) picked up a huge win in its season opener against 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Clark Atlanta University (0-1). The Falcons were in control throughout the entire game as they held a comfortable lead most of the first and second half. The Falcons were led by junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) who scored 18 points and ripped down seven rebounds to lead the Falcons in both categories.
Parrott shot 80 percent from the field only missing two attempts the entire game. Junior Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) and senior Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) each chipped in 13 points while Jones added six rebounds and Lewis added a team-high six assists. Senior Manal Cali (Northampton, England/Northampton School for Girls) was the only other Falcon in double-digits with 12.
Freshman Trena Moore-Smith (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) came off the bench and showed strong leadership at the point as she dished out five assists. Senior Amanda Scott (Cullman, Ala./West Point) had limited action as she only played 15 minutes but was able to snag six rebounds to tie for second on the team.
UM opened the game with a 7-0 run over the first 2:47 off jumpers from Parrott and Cali and a three from Lewis. The Lady Panthers worked their way back into the game as they took the lead with a three-pointer at the 12:36 mark. The Falcons would not let CAU keep that lead for long as senior Tateshia Page (Tupelo, Miss./Lanier), Cali, Lewis and Parrott combined on a 7-4 run to take a 21-20 lead. The Falcons continued to slowly build their lead and eventually took a 43-38 advantage into halftime.
The second half was all Falcons as they never relinquished their lead and built up a double-digit lead for most of the second half. The Falcons opened the second half with a 15-7 run to expand their lead to 58-44. The Um lead continued to hover around the 14-point mark the rest of the way to the eventual final score of 81-67.
The Falcons return to action Friday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m. as they travel to the North Georgia College and State University Tournament to take on Rollins College.
