Falcons Continue Their Hot Start with 68-59 Victory
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (6-1) remained unbeaten inside the McChesney Student Activities Center as the Falcons earned a 68-59 win over visiting Talladega College (4-7). The Falcons had four players in double-figures including scoring leader Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) who had 16.
Lewis led the team with her 16 points off of 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. She had a team-high four steals as well. Senior Alex Sanabria (Miami, Fla./Miami) chipped in 14 points as she was nearly perfect from the free throw line going 9-of-10. She also was second on the team in rebounds with seven and led the team in assists with five. Senior Amanda Scott (Cullman, Ala./West Point) had 13 points off the bench while junior Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) had 11 points and six rebounds. Junior Tiaren Young (Forestdale, Ala./Minor) led the team in rebounding with eight boards.
The Falcons and Tornadoes battled for the first seven minutes of the game with neither team gaining much of an advantage. Up 10-8 with 13:28 left in the first the Tornadoes went on an 8-0 run to open up a 10-point lead but the Falcons responded with an 11-0 run of their own to retake the lead with 6:32 left in the half. The rest of the first was a back-and-forth battle and ended with the Falcons ahead by just one 30-29.
The beginning of the second half was much like the end of the first with neither team getting much momentum. With 13:26 left in the second half the Falcons began a 10-0 run that featured a pair of three pointers by Lewis and Jones that gave UM a 53-45 lead. That would be all it would take as the Falcons continued to hold onto their eight-point lead the rest of the way. It would balloon to as much as 10 but the game ended with the Falcons ahead 68-59.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2:00 p.m. as they host Martin Methodist College.
