Falcons Out Fly Red Hawks, 65-50
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (7-1) picked up another win inside the friendly confines of BankTrust Arena as they downed the visiting Red Hawks of Martin Methodist College (6-4), 65-50. UM is off to its best start since the 1995-96 season when the Falcons started 21-1. The Falcons were led by senior Amanda Scott (Cullman, Ala./West Point) who came off the bench to score 18 points and grab nine boards. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from three point range and hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor.
Seniors Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) and Alex Sanabria (Miami, Fla./Miami) each chipped in nine points. Sanabria added five rebounds and four assists while Lewis had four rebounds. Junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) had eight points and five rebounds from her post position.
The Falcons controlled the glass out-rebounding the Red Hawks 44-36. They also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second-chance points.
Both teams played an even ball game early in the first half but with 14:44 remaining in the first period the Falcons went on a 13-2 run the evaporated the Red Hawks three-point lead. UM went up 21-13 and never looked back as MMC was never able to regain the lead. The first half ended with the Falcons up 30-20.
The Red Hawks opened up the second half with a strong push as they cut the Falcons lead to just seven two minutes into the period. That sparked the Falcons to go on a 12-2 run and open up a 17-point lead. Following the run the Falcons never gave up their double-digit lead the rest of the game as they ended the period up 65-50.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Dec. 19 at 4:00 p.m. as they travel to No. 3 Delta State University for a non-conference match-up.
